Lee McQueen — Who He Was 

Lee Alexander McQueen was born on 17 March 1969 in Stratford, East London, the youngest of six children. He left school at 16 to apprentice on Savile Row — first at Anderson & Sheppard and then at Gieves & Hawkes — before studying at Saint Martins (MA fashion, 1992), where his graduating collection was bought in its entirety by Isabella Blow, the fashion editor who would become his most significant early patron. He founded his own label in 1992. His shows — ‘The Highland Rape’ (1995), ‘Dante’ (1996), ‘Eclect Dissect’ (1997), ‘Joan’ (1998), ‘No. 13’ (1999), ‘Voss’ (2001), ‘Supercalifragilistic’ (2002), ‘Plato’s Atlantis’ (2010) — are studied in design schools globally as benchmarks of what fashion can do as theatre, as art, and as political statement. He was appointed creative director of Givenchy in 1996 at age 27 and left in 2001 to focus on his own label. He was awarded four British Designer of the Year awards. Sarah Burton joined Alexander McQueen in 1996 and was Lee McQueen’s right hand throughout his career — she knew the brand’s archive and creative vocabulary more intimately than anyone. When Lee died in February 2010, Burton was appointed creative director.
